The comment I was responding to was that Agilebits should want to "hand that responsibility" to Apple/Google/Dropbox because for example Apple would have greater resources to fight attempts to access data. I was aware they use AWS but that goes to the same point. Based on that and some of their tech blog entries it's doubtful that that they're using Google Drive under the hood but that's not definitive. It's been a while since I read this, and I don't recall that it gets too specifically into how vaults/vault entries are stored but it does touch specifically on the storage of account related data in AWS databases. This is a really cool read for anyone who's interested, and is a demonstration IMO of the fact that AgileBits is serious about security in their product architecture. What makes you think it would be apparent to you if they did use Google? Lots of ways to use Google without the branded Google Drive thing.ĪgileBits released a white paper that describes the design and security model behind 1Password for Teams, which is the same with respect to syncing and data storage as the other types of 1Password accounts.

If you are that concerned I think you should give the following blog post a read In many ways, Agilebits should want to hand that responsibility to either Apple, Google, or Dropbox, as they are much less likely to roll over or be compromised vis-a-vis law enforcement or hackers.

Yes, I understand that the vault itself is encrypted, but wouldn't you want some one with LOTS of money and a REALLY vested interest in protecting your data to handle your syncing? I say this not as regards to reliability, but security - who's better able to resist over-broad court orders, legal fishing expeditions, or other threats to their business - Apple or Agilebits? That being said, I think from a user perspective, it's really hard to prefer their cloud sync vs iCloud (specifically). I love 1Password, have been a customer for many years, and I'm happy to give them money. You know, I really wonder about each tom, dick, and harry service running their own sync platforms.

I favor the built in sync because it's less things to install and Dropbox software is obnoxious and brittle, especially on MacOS. And 1Password isn't perfect, I believe they leaked encrypted vault contents due to a Cloudflare security incident. Worth noting Dropbox security is actually quite good, they support 2FA with recovery codes. I used Dropbox sync until I switched to subscription. Would you say the standalone software employs lock-in? Just because Agilebits won’t support it in perpetuity?

The exact same inconvenience would be there if Apple released a new OS and Agilebits didn’t have plans to update any of their software, subscription or standalone. But just because something is inconvenient doesn’t mean that there’s lock-in. I’m not disagreeing that switching platforms is inconvenient because of course it is. Right, but how is that lock-in? I’m taking umbrage with your characterization of 1Passworda features and data formats as “lock-in”. You've already absorbed the hassle of switching products. That is, you've already researched a competing product. I completely trust you that it only takes five minutes… because it's part of your workflow. It takes me less than 5 minutes to get all my data out of 1Password, and into KeePass. A subscription model introduces different methods to screwing over customers, but a subscription model does not inherently imply a guaranteed path towards screwing over the customer. When AgileBits screwing over their customers could happen regardless of whether they have a subscription model or not, at any time between now and whenever. You're coming to the conclusion that someday, in the future, AgileBits will screw over their customers. Support of old software is not guaranteed even with one-off purchases, that has always been at the discretion of the vendor. I hate AgileBits so much! I'll pay their extortionist fees for one more year, and then switch." But most of us will just repeat that statement every year. The best among us will make it manageable, "Grrr. You either pay or you lose your ability to continue working (without major hassle). You can weigh your options, kick the tires on other products, survey the landscape etc… With subscriptions it's pony up or shut up. So that's three or four years of usage, at a minimum, before obsolescence kicks in.

Presumably, your one-off software purchase is supported for at least a couple of years. But the momentum lock-in (for lack of a better term) doesn't really exist with paid upgrades.
